Monash University Partnership

ONCALL are proud to partner with Monash University. A formal industry collaboration was established in 2012 with the Faculty of Arts, through the School of Languages, Culture and Linguistics.

The agreement outlines a specific project, jointly funded by ONCALL and Monash to be conducted by Mr Marc Orlando on digital pen technology and interpreting practice; its impact and potential uses within the translation and interpreting industry.

It is incredibly beneficial to have a relationship of this kind with a business that delivers interpreting and translation services to such a wide range of clients. We value this collaboration, not only for the support it provides us to undertake this particular research project, but as an extremely valuable conduit for knowledge exchange: a mutually enriching experience for ourselves and our industry partner. It helps us to ensure our research is not only in relevant in the academic context, but also has ‘real world’ application, especially – in this case – in business settings.” Associate Professor Rita Wilson, the Head of the School of Languages, Cultures and Linguistics.

Mr Orlando stated that he was keen to undertake this particular research project in collaboration with ONCALL as an industry partner, to ensure that the research focus would not only further academic interest in the new technologies being developed and utilised in the industry, but to also ensure that there was a direct link back into industry for the outputs from this project: “Such a collaboration with a key industry partner like ONCALL is the ideal scenario for a researcher and practitioner, as it helps to keep a very practical and concrete link with the sector and the profession, but also shows how research and practice can inform each other. This research project will be carried out in Australia but also in Europe, in relation with the European Commission, the largest employer of interpreters, and should help to show how digital technology can impact on interpreting practice and facilitate work of today’s interpreters”

“ONCALL sees this collaboration as a way of creating closer links between academia and industry for knowledge exchange and sharing of expertise. The potential benefit of the results of the study isn’t just for industry and academia, but also the end users of services to whom we provide interpreters and translators”. Ari Pappas, Executive Director – Marketing and client Services at ONCALL.

As the partnership expands, ONCALL looks forward to cooperating with Monash in the future with more groundbreaking research.
